“Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.” – Andy Rooney
Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8,516 meters (27,940 ft), follows Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga. Part of the Everest massif, Lhotse is linked to Everest via the South Col. Its name means “South Peak” in Tibetan. Besides the main summit, Lhotse has two notable subsidiary peaks: Lhotse Middle (East) at 8,414 meters (27,605 ft) and Lhotse Shar at 8,383 meters (27,503 ft). The main summit lies on the border of China (Tibet) and Nepal’s Khumbu region.
An early attempt to climb Lhotse was made in 1955 by the International Himalayan Expedition, led by Norman Dyhrenfurth. This team included two Austrians (cartographer Erwin Schneider and Ernst Senn), two Swiss climbers (Bruno Spirig and Arthur Spöhel), and three Americans (Fred Beckey, George Bell, and Richard McGowan)—marking the first American presence in the Everest region.
The first successful ascent of Lhotse’s main summit was achieved on May 18, 1956, by the Swiss climbers Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger. Lhotse Shar was first climbed on May 12, 1970, by Sepp Mayerl and Rolf Walter of Austria. Lhotse Middle remained the highest unclimbed named point for many years until May 23, 2001, when a Russian team consisting of Eugeny Vinogradsky, Sergei Timofeev, Alexei Bolotov, and Petr Kuznetsov completed the first ascent.
Himalayan Traverse Adventure has designed this expedition for mountaineers seeking the challenge and prestige of climbing the world’s fourth highest peak.
