“I shall always remember the next day as one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. As we marched on, we eventually spotted the gleaming golden towers of a distant monastery. Above them, bathed in the morning sunlight, were massive ice walls, and we slowly realized we were gazing at the giant trio: Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu.” – Heinrich Harrer
Manaslu, also called Kuang, is the eighth highest mountain in the world. Located about forty miles east of Annapurna, it dominates the Gurkha massif. Its long ridges and valley glaciers provide multiple viable approaches, while the peak itself rises steeply, creating a commanding presence visible from far away. The mountain was originally known as Kutan, with “l’tang” in Tibetan meaning “flat place,” describing the summit’s general shape. Later, it was renamed Manaslu, derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa, which can be translated as “Mountain of the Spirit.”
The first successful ascent was made in 1956 by T. Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu during a Japanese expedition. The peak remained unclimbed again until 1971, when another Japanese team completed the second ascent. The first American ascent was achieved in 1997 by Charlie Mace. Today, there are about six established climbing routes, with the south face considered one of the most challenging in mountaineering history. By 2003, Manaslu had recorded only 240 successful ascents and 52 fatalities, ranking it as the fourth most dangerous 8,000-meter peak, after Annapurna, Nanga Parbat, and another major Himalayan giant.

I spent very memorable days in the Everest region in Nepal. I used to dream to see this highest peak of the world and now I arrested it in my camera. My guide arranged everything and helped me a lot. He did not let me feel tired and boring.
