“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” -Jack Kerouac
Rising proudly among the majestic Himalayas in Nepal’s eastern Khumbu region, Mount Baruntse is a well-known peak for mountaineering expeditions. Situated close to the Everest range, the mountain reaches an impressive height of 7,162 meters. The most common approach to Baruntse is from the south, where climbers often ascend Mera Peak first for acclimatization before heading up the valley to Baruntse Base Camp. The mountain was first summited via the south ridge on May 30, 1954, by Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow from New Zealand, under an expedition led by Sir Edmund Hillary.
Mount Baruntse features four summits and is bordered by the Hunku Glacier to the south, Barun Glacier to the east, and Imja Glacier to the northwest. Though not extremely technical, the Baruntse climb requires strong physical endurance, as it lies in one of the more remote sections of the Everest region. The route is enriched with dense forests, glacial streams, and green hills, making it both scenic and challenging. Baruntse stands gracefully surrounded by some of the world’s tallest peaks—Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu—adding to its grandeur.
Due to its remoteness, the region is sparsely populated, giving it an untouched and isolated atmosphere. Sherpa settlements are found only in a few main villages. The Buddhist monasteries, traditions, and cultural lifestyle are mainly seen around Lukla, after which the trail leads through more secluded terrain.
Despite being off the beaten path, the Baruntse expedition rewards climbers with breathtaking sights such as glacial lakes near the base camp and stunning panoramas of surrounding peaks, including Everest. This journey offers a perfect blend of adventure and beauty. At Himalayan Traverse Adventure, we have designed this remarkable expedition for mountaineers eager to summit a 7,000-meter peak while gaining valuable experience in the heart of the Himalayas.

I spent very memorable days in the Everest region in Nepal. I used to dream to see this highest peak of the world and now I arrested it in my camera. My guide arranged everything and helped me a lot. He did not let me feel tired and boring.
